Digital Skills in Vocational Education and Training: Opportunities and Challenges in View of Changing Labour Market

Digitalisation is one of key megatrends that affects both labour markets and education systems. In this context, vocational education and training (VET) is confronted with the high expectation that it should prepare learners for the digitalised world of work in a targeted and, if possible, occupation-specific manner. Such aspirations have become key in many international cooperation projects that support VET. But what digital skills are actually in demand in the labour markets of low and middle-income countries? And how can VET sustainably contribute to the targeted development of such competences against the backdrop of scarce financial resources?

The potential of XR and VR for Skills Development in ASEAN countries

Alessia Evi, External Consultant at ITCILO

Two and a half years after the outbreak of the Covid-19 crisis, societies all-over the world are still suffering from the impact of the pandemic. The TVET and the Education systems in general have not been spared and the lack of system-level digital strategies, poor technological infrastructure, and weak teachers’ e-readiness, has exposed important inequalities in the global skills development picture. Emerging technologies such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality (all together known as XR - Extended Reality) can support TVET and Education systems in easing the impact of future disruptions, ensuring not only continuity of training delivery but also an impact in terms of scalability, personalization, safety, and cost-effectiveness, to drive the sustainable improvement of Skills Development opportunities, far beyond the pandemic response.

During this talk, we will converse about the ongoing advancement of collaboratively developed action-oriented solutions in the field of Extended Reality applications for skills development to respond to the challenges brought forth by the stakeholders involved in the digital innovation process of some of the ASEAN countries we had the opportunity to work with, at the ITCILO.

The FoBBIZ Talk will be held in English.

Promoting basic skills for socio-economically disadvantaged young people and adults

Promoting basic skills for socio-economically disadvantaged young people and adults

In Switzerland, compulsory basic education ensures the development of basic skills such as literacy, numeracy and digital numeracy, which are prerequisites for any professional education and training.

In developing countries, many children and youth miss entire years of basic education. Therefore, once they become adults, they often do not have the minimum required mastery of such skills, which compromises their chances for a fulfilled life with financial autonomy. The situation is even worse for socio-economically disadvantaged people : people living in rural areas, people with disabilities, women with many children, people with precarious status, etc. Promoting the right to acquire basic skills for them is not an easy task. The coming Online RECI Open Space (OROS) aims to introduce the topic in an informed way and encourage open exchange between the participants.

Join our interactive webinar on 24 August from 3pm to 5pm to discuss and find solutions to promote basic skills for socio-economically disadvantaged young people and adults who missed out on basic education.

This event is organised in cooperation with the RECI working group on Adult Education. It will be held in English (with French subtitles).

Please find more information directly on the RECI web page.

So many questions, treated with substance by Serge Frech, that will certainly also find an echo in the international context.

Curriculum Development - Situated Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Emanuel Wüthrich, Senior Advisor (SFUVET)

The benefit of a Vocational Education and Training (VET) system depends on the relevance of the competences trained. Thus, relevant competences must be identified and transposed into a functional curriculum. Situated VET is a coherent and holistic approach to learning in VET. The real work situation as reported from the respective professionals is the basis for the definition of a competence, for the curriculum and for training and assessment. Thus, the Situated VET approach is naturally relevant, comprehensible, effective and coherent.
